Sweet orange, also known as Citrus aurantium dulcis, is a fruit that produces a peel oil known as Citrus sinensis. This oil is classified as a biological product and finds application in a variety of skin care agents and fragrance ingredients. The fruit is commonly used for treating high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and strokes.
Sweet orange is not a fruit that grows wild anywhere. However, it is believed that the fruit finds its roots in Asia and is a hybrid of the mandarin and pomelo. Botanists believed it to be a kind of the commonly found bitter orange for quite a while. This is the reason why it is called C. Aurantium var. Sinensis.
The amazing benefits of sweet orange oil
Rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other health-boosting compounds, sweet oranges are potent catalysts for good health. But there are many other benefits, particularly of the sweet orange peel oil, which most of you may not be aware of. Here goes the list:
#1: Relieving muscle spasms The cramps, pain, discomfort, and at worse, cough from muscle spasms can get the best of you. Sweet orange peel oil is seen to be a powerful counter to these involuntary muscle contractions as it contains a good degree of antispasmodic properties. The oil can be mixed with a carrier oil and massaged on the abdomen, muscle, or anywhere where there are cramps. This can provide quick relief. At the same time, you can massage your neck and chest with the oil to alleviate spasmodic cough. Some people also diffuse the oil throughout their home.
#2: Boosts skin health Sweet orange peel oil is loaded with alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), which stimulate the growth of new skin cells, minimizes sun damage, and moisturizes the epidermis. AHAs are usable as water-binding agents in certain cosmetics. However, they are mostly used in modern cosmetics owing to their excellent exfoliating properties. At the same time, sweet orange peel oil has anti-septic and anti-bacterial properties that reduce acne problems. Just take a few drops of the oil on a cotton swab and dab gently on your face. It's a great way to achieve youthful, glowing, and clear skin.
#3: Elevates your mood Sweet orange peel oil finds wide applications in aromatherapy, and there are good reasons for the same. One of the primary objectives of aromatherapy is to reduce stress and tiredness—something which this oil does, owing to its pleasant smell and other therapeutic properties. It boosts your mood by reducing feelings of depression, stress, and anxiety, thereby giving you mental clarity.
In most cases, sweet orange peel oil is massaged on the head and body to relax muscles and de-stress the mind and body. You can also dab a drop or two of sweet orange peel oil onto your wrists and neck to carry the scent wherever you go throughout the day.
#4: Improves digestion Another great advantage of sweet orange essential oil is that it boosts your gut health. The fruit is essentially a cholagogue, which means it promotes the secretion and flow of bile from your liver. Bile is a vital compound that aids the digestion process by stimulating healthy hormones and enzymes. The best way to use sweet orange peel oil to promote digestion is by diffusing it in the air for about 15 to 20 minutes before having your meal. You can also mix the oil with a carrier oil and massage your stomach and lower abdomen with it. It can really make a difference.
#5: Strengthens immunity The sweet orange essential oil has a high limonene content, which makes it a very powerful antioxidant. The oil helps your body to combat free radicals—something that helps eliminate signs of aging and the chance of developing certain health issues. The oil’s diuretic properties aid the body in getting rid of toxins, and, in turn, make the immune system function more efficiently. Sweet orange peel oil is also rich in tonic properties, which help make all systems of the body stronger. When all vital body systems are working efficiently, you feel a lot healthier overall. So, you can just diffuse this oil throughout your home to boost your immune system function.
#6: Maintains oral health You can use sweet orange peel oil to maintain healthy teeth. Because sweet orange peel oil is excellent for fighting bacteria, it can be used to combat oral problems like mouth ulcers, gingivitis, and bad breath. You can add ½ teaspoon of salt and five drops of sweet orange peel oil to a glass of warm water and rinse your mouth with the mixture. Doing so for at least one minute will significantly improve your dental hygiene and prevent oral health complications.
